There’s nothing like a beautiful head of tousled waves. It looks natural and fresh and just all around gorgeous. I am asked to do this style all the time on clients and it also happens to be my go to style for a day at work or play. I’ve tried a ton of products and tools over the years as I’ve perfected this look. Read on for a few tips and tricks on how to get the perfect wave!

Prep the hair

To get the best curls and waves, you’ll want to prep your hair accordingly. Depending on the kind of hair you have, you can apply any or all of the following products:

  • Thermal protectant spray
  • Working texture or beach wave spray
  • Working hair spray

Begin by liberally spraying a few shots through the entire head, and then comb it through for even distribution. Make sure to flip your hair upside down to inject some extra volume to that area. From here you can start the curling process!

Design Your Curls

There are many ways to curl your hair, from loose, textured waves to sophisticated, classic curls. It all depends on the look you’re after. And while there are a ton of incredible new hair tools that come out every year, you can get a great style with the curling iron you’ve had in your drawer for years. As a hair stylist, I keep a variety of tools close to me so that I can give my clients different looks. Here a few tips to help you when you’re curling or waving:

  • If you want more volume in your hair, hold it up at an angle and start the curl from the scalp, feeding the hair into the clamp or wand as you go. For clamp irons, it doesn’t get better (or more inexpensive) than Conair Hot Sticks!
  • To achieve a tousled, lived-in look, curl only the middle part of the hair strand with a curling wand. A fave iron of mine is the Bombay Rose Gold wand! (Code MORGAN30 will score you 30 percent off!) I also really like the Nume classic wands and use them a lot!
  • For a quick and easy head of gorgeous curls, use a rotating curling iron like The Beachwaver. Leave one to two inches out at the bottom for a bohemian look if you wish!

Finish It Off…

To make sure your curls last all day, you’ll want to use styling products from the beginning to the very end of your process. If want volume and hold, I’d definitely recommend a strong finishing spray. For beachy waves that will fall naturally throughout the day, another shot of texture spray will do. Here are a few tips for finishing your style:

  • A classic finishing spray will work wonders. Spray over the finished style once, comb it through to distribute, and then spray over the top again.
  • Getting rid of flyaways is possible via a finishing cream or gel. Use a very small amount on a toothbrush to lay them down.
  • For a little volume insurance, spritz a medium hold texture/spray wax into the roots and over your finished style. Remember to flip your head upside down to get the product underneath your hair!
