You deserve to chill out…I’m on it…
There are times when we feel like we’re way too stressed. Between putting in time at work, taking care of others and organizing our own lives, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Then there are the times we overwork ourselves on purpose, clocking in extra hours, engaging in drama and doing the most overall. What we forget to do in that process is to make time for ourselves!
When I finally remember to slow down, I listen to music. I am always impressed by a solid cover song…it takes a lot to make someone else’s creation your own while still being respectful of the original arrangement. When it’s done right, the results are magical. Take a look and listen to seven of the cover songs that put me in a chilled state of mind.
Maxwell- This Woman’s Work (Originally recorded by Kate Bush)
Did you know that this song was a cover? The original version of this song is hauntingly sincere, and Maxwell delivers the same beautiful emotion in his version.
Jose Gonzalez- Heartbeats (Originally recorded by The Knife)
This recording by Swedish indie artist Jose Gonzales is a stripped down version of the midtempo and quirky original. To be honest, I think both the cover and the original put me in an equally great mood!
Sixpence None The Richer- Don’t Dream It’s Over (Originally Recorded by Crowded House)
The lyrics in this song have always meant a lot to me. The original version can never be replaced, but this was an absolutely beautiful effort that I enjoy listening to.
Stevie Nicks- Crash Into Me (Originally Recorded by Dave Matthews Band)
I’ll never stop talking about Stevie Nicks and her incredible talent. Her version of this Dave Matthews band song shows off the raspy and rich vocal tones that she is so revered for.
Boyz II Men- Can You Stand the Rain (Originally Recorded by New Edition)
Two of the best r&b groups ever. Both versions are beyond fantastic, but I’m so impressed at how Boyz II Men’s acapella remake pays the perfect homage to the original. For an extra dose of the feels, watch the 80’s r&b goodness that is the original video.
Shy Girls- Time After Time (Orginally Recorded by Cyndi Lauper)
This song is such classic, and I’d never heard a version I loved until Dan Vidmar, aka Shy Girls made it his own with his incredible voice. I honestly think I could listen to the original and the cover fifty times each and still want to hear both again.
Jasmine Thompson- Let Her Go (Originally Recorded by Passenger)
Although this song is somewhat downtrodden, Jasmine Thompson’s angelic voice will immediately give you the chills and all the feels. It’s got a different overall vibe than the original, which is also quite moving.
I hope you will listen to these songs and let them help you relax!
